Hi Families!
What a fun week!! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for a successful fundraiser. Your generosity was incredible and I can’t wait to tell you how it will impact our class. Thank you again. The race is on Friday, October 25. We would love for you to come cheer us on. Go Fabulous Flemingos! I loved seeing you at conferences and getting to talk to you about your child. It is one of my favorite things. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for all the wonderful books purchased from the Book Fair. I shared them all with the kids and they were excited about all of them. We will read them throughout the year. We had a fun Game Day on Friday. Families,
We had a busy week! We had a great turn out for Walk to School Day. On Thursday, we had a successful STEAM Showcase. Throughout second grade, students will be researching the decline in the Monarch Butterfly population over the course of an entire year. We have also already begun brainstorming ways we can help. As teachers, our hope is that the students are able to recognize their individual impact in our environment and put to use the research they discover. This particular STEAM Showcase, we had a visitor from the Chattahoochee Nature Center come in and answer student questions. During the rest of the time, students were engaging in research rotations where they read, watched videos, and looked at graphs relating to the Monarch butterfly. Visitors from the county came in and they were impressed with our class as well as the rest of the students in our school. Our kids were able to articulate their questions in addition to how it relates to what we are learning. I was super proud. Conference forms went home on Monday. I believe I have all 22 back already! You guys rock! Finally, as you have heard, Monday starts the first count day for our fundraiser. I have already heard of some creative ideas that the kids are doing to raise money. I can't wait to hear about it! Thank you again for all your support! I hope everyone had an amazing weekend in this beautiful Fall weather. It is finally starting to feel like October. I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend full of rest and fun outdoor activities! If ever your child is playing a sports match, dance competition, musical performance, etc over the weekend, please let me know. I would love to come out and support. With cross country coaching and morning meets, it can be difficult, but I can try to make some afternoon games. This past week in second grade was full of learning and fun! As mentioned in the post below, we finished our first STEAM showcase project. On Wednesday, your smart kiddos their developed recipes for environmentally sustainable glue to the test. I was impressed not only by their ability to develop working glue and meet the challenge criteria, but also by their amazing communication and collaboration while working in groups. I know I may be biased, but I personally think I have a collection of the kindest and most empathetic students in the entire school. They are such an awesome bunch! This week, our schedule will be slightly altered due to testing in 3rd and 5th grade. We will have specials at 8:30, instead of 2:10. We will have reading at the end of the day. Our lunch time will remain the same (11:52-12:22). Please let me know if you have any questions. This week our learning focuses are as follows: Here is what we are learning for the week of 9/9: Reading/ELA- We will continue to focus on questioning while we read, and we will continue to explore character traits, character changes, and story structure (beginning, middle, and end). We will review problem/solution and the moral/lesson within stories as well. Ask your child what the difference is between a thick and a thin question. :) Phonics – We will review irregular plural nouns (feet, teeth, mice, fish, etc.) and collective nouns. We will continue to practice with short/long vowels and vowel teams. Writing- We will continue our unit on small moment stories (personal narratives). We will focus on telling a complete beginning, middle, and end. Math- We will finish our unit on Place Value and review Skip Counting. We will also introduce one step word problems. Social Studies- We will review the regions of our state (Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau). We will introduce the major rivers in our state. This week we finished our first STEAM Showcase and the kids were so impressive. Their challenge was to create an environmentally sustainable glue using flour, baking soda, cornstarch, salt, and water. They started with one team created recipe and tried to improve each additional trial based on results. They worked well with each other and we had some successes. Be sure to ask your child about it.
SeeSaw parent access codes will be coming home next week. Be on the lookout so you can see what your children are doing in class. Here is what we are learning the week of 9/2: Reading/ELA-Story Structure- beginning, middle, and end/ introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution Phonics – Irregular nouns and continual practice with short/long vowels and vowel teams. I am so sorry about updating the blog so late this week. As many of you heard, my husband and I had a tough weekend upon losing our sweet dog, Arya, to a lake toxin. Typically I will have the blog updated before the weekend is over. Thank you everyone for the sweet words, letters, and hugs! It means so much to us both and we felt all your love and support. This week in school, we are studying the following, Reading: Schema and making connections to characters Phonics: Open and closed vowel sounds Writing: Beginning our small moments and narrative writing unit- this week will be a lot of brainstorming and continuing conversations about why writers write Math: Continuation of addition and subtraction strategies through 20 (specifically- "making a ten," "number families," and "missing addends") Science: States of matter and investigating how objects are made up of multiple pieces Several people have asked about homework opportunities and "at home" practice online. I have attached several links to fluency math games below that can also be found under the resources tab. Also, Friday you will also be receiving login information about a new program the school is using called "Moby Max." We will be using Moby Max in the classroom, and it can be accessed at home for additional practice. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. https://www.abcya.com/games/math_facts_game https://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards https://www.splashmath.com/math-skills/math-facts Hi second graders and parents of second graders,
Thank you all for your help in making week one of second grade a success! These past two days, we spent most of our time getting to know our new classmates and procedures. We integrated some academics with a few fun "get to know you" activities. Next week, the plan is to really hit the ground running with the whole learning part of school. In math, we will be working on adding and subtracting within 20. Fluency with math facts is really important in second grade, so we will be focusing on strategies that help us add and subtract quickly. In reading, we will be starting our new phonics program and the Reader's Workshop model with lessons focusing on strategies that "Good Readers" use. In writing, we will be focusing on "Why writers write" and completing several pre-assessments. For science and social studies, we will only be working on one or the other at a time. We will be starting with science next week focusing on STEAM and the 4 c's design process. We will also do a short lesson on seasons. I am so excited for week 2 of second grade! I know it will be terrific! Have a wonderful weekend! XOXO Mrs. Fleming PS: Don't forget Open House is Tuesday night! |
